What is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?

According to the Canadian Lung Association COPD is short for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is an umbrella term used to describe progressive lung diseases including emphysema, chronic bronchitis and refractory (non-reversible) asthma. This disease is characterized by increasing breathlessness.

While COPD is a disease commonly caused by smoking, and there is currently no cure, you can slow the progression of COPD and improve your lung function by quitting smoking.

The best way to prevent COPD is to never smoke, but of course many people do. If you’re ready to end your addiction to nicotine, contact Calgary Laserworks at 403-301-3730. We are truly here to help you succeed.

Dangers of Secondhand Smoke

“Secondhand smoke is a mixture of two forms of smoke that come from burning tobacco: side-stream smoke (the smoke from the lighted end of a cigarette) and mainstream smoke (the smoke inhaled and exhaled by a smoker). Side-stream smoke is more toxic than mainstream smoke, as it has much higher concentrations of cancer-causing substances. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke.” — Tobacco Stops with Me.com

Exposure to secondhand smoke continues to be a serious health problem. In fact, non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke absorb the same harmful chemicals as smokers. Studies show that even low levels of secondhand smoke exposure can be harmful causing numerous health problems including increasing your risk for lung disease, heart disease, heart attacks and strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and many life-threatening cancers.

Secondhand smoke effects everyone and everything around you — children, pregnant women, people with breathing issues, your family, your friends, your co-workers. If you’re a smoker, isn’t it time to let it go? It’s truly never too late.
